Howard Scores 2,000th Point Against Drew

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America men's basketball senior Jay Howard registered his 2,000th career point as he poured in a career-high 36 points. It proved to be not enough in the contest however as the Drew Rangers edged Catholic, 76-75.

Howard entered the game 30 points shy of the plateau and hit the mark with 7:32 to play as he converted on an and-one, sinking the free throw to become just the third player in program history to score 2,000 points. He is also just the 22nd player collegiate player in DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) history to accomplish the feat.

Howard's 2,000th brought Catholic to within three of Drew, 66-63 and started a 9-3 run that tied the game at 69-all on a layup by junior Andre Mitchell with under four minutes to play.

The Rangers seemingly had an answer for each Catholic late basket as Catholic tied it twice more; the final time on free throws by Mitchell that evened it at 73.

Drew again answered with a 3-pointer to go up three, but a jumper by Howard with 44 seconds left made it a one-point game.

Catholic got the stop it needed as sophomore Brandon Easton got the steal and possession back for Catholic with 17 seconds left.

The Cardinals got a 3-point attempt off with one second left on the clock but the shot found the right of the iron as time expired.

Howard played all 40 minutes 10th time this season as he went 14-of-22 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. He rounded out his line with nine rebounds and an assist.

Mitchell was the only other Card in double-figure scoring with 10 points to go along with two rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Riley Hayes led all players with 12 rebounds and chipped in eight points.

Drew fired off 32 3-pointers in the game, connecting on 11 to help overcome Catholic's 42-36 rebounding advantage and 18-11 edge in second-chance points.

Catholic will look to get back on track this coming Wednesday when they host Susquehanna at 7 p.m.
