Catholic 90, Salisbury 79

Jan. 9, 2002

SALISBURY, Md. - Catholic extended its win streak to 11 games as juniors Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) and Craig Avallone (Lincroft, N.J./Christian Bros. Acad.) scored 20 points respectively to lead CUA past Salisbury 90-79 in a CAC contest.

Hilleary also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to notch his second consecutive double-double, and his sixth on the season, while Avallone was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line. The Sea Gulls' Doug King dropped a game-high 30 points before fouling out late in the second half.

Junior Kevin Wise (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame [N.J.]) chipped in 16 points on 4-for-7 from long range while sophomore Will Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) tallied 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore Blair Mills (Hebron, Md./Wicomico) scored seven points, collected six rebounds and blocked three shots in his return to the Delmarva area.

After a nip-and-tuck first half where Catholic (11-1, 3-0 CAC) lead by four after the first 20 minutes, the Cardinals gradually increased their lead in the second half courtesy of a 17-5 run early in the stanza where Salisbury found the iron unkind, only making two field goals in a stretch of almost 10 minutes. The Sea Gulls (4-9, 0-3) would pull within eight at 79-71 with just under two minutes but CUA went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line to ice the win.

Catholic shot 29-for-52 (55.8%) while Salisbury was 28-for-73 (38.4%). The Cardinals held a 41-35 rebound advantage.

CUA will take on Gallaudet at the DuFour Center on Saturday, Jan. 12, in a CAC matchup. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
