Catholic advances to championship game

WASHINGTON - Catholic hit the century mark for the second time this season as five Cardinals finished with double figures in an 107-60 win over Washington & Jefferson in the first round of the 16th annual CUA Pepsi Classic here at the DuFour Center Saturday afternoon.

Junior Will Morley led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. He scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half. Seniors Craig Avallone and Matt Hilleary and freshman Matt Tanner each chipped in 13 points respectively. Avallone added four rebounds and three assists while Hilleary hauled seven boards and blocked one shot.

A 19-8 run opened up a nine-point lead midway through the first half, leading the Cardinals to a 51-33 lead at the break.

An 18-0 run to open the second stanza broke the game wide open.

Freshman Shane Sowden added 10 points to help the Cardinals shoot 40-of-68 (58.8%) from the floor, the team's best performance of the year.

Tony Franz led the Presidents (1-7) with 13 points. Teammate Nolan Larry added 11 for W&J.

Catholic (8-1) takes on Gettysburg, who were 76-63 winners over Frostburg State in the first game, for the 2003 CUA Pepsi Classic Championship here at the DuFour Center at 4 p.m. Washington & Jefferson will battle Frostburg State in the consolation game at 2 p.m.
