Catholic 82, Haverford 70

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Catholic overcame an impressive performance by Haverford forward Mark Gabriel and got 19 points apiece from Matt Hilleary and William Morley as the Cardinals defeated the Fords 82-70.

Catholic shot 60.9% from the floor in the first half, yet needed a Hilleary putback with one second left in the frame to take 35-33 lead. The Cardinals (2-0) had jumped out to an early 12-5 lead, only to see three turnovers help Haverford tie the game at 14-14. It was one of eight ties in the first half.

Catholic came out of the locker room and finished a 17-6 run with a Will Jawando jumper in the lane that put the Cardinals on top 50-39. Haverford (1-2) never got any closer than seven the rest of the way.

Hilleary shot 9-for-13 from the floor to go with a team-high three steals and three blocked shots. Morley was 6-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the foul line. Craig Avallone and Adam Dickman had four assists apiece. Fifteen players saw time for Catholic and 11 of them scored. The Cardinals shot 54.4% from the floor (31-for-57) and attempted just seven three-pointers, making two.

Haverford was led by Gabriel's 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting. Matt Stein added 12. The Fords were 6-for-20 (30%) from 3-point range.

The Cardinals return to the floor Saturday, Nov. 30, as they play at Scranton at 3 p.m.
