Cardinals Come Back to Beat Neumann 85-73
CUA scores 46 points in the paint

READING, Pa. - After a slow start the Catholic University men's  basketball squad (1-0) forced the ball into the paint and eventually beat the Neumann Knights (0-1) 85-73 at the Wyndham Tip Off Tournament hosted by Albright.  With the win the Cards advance to the championship game on Saturday.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead as turnovers and ice-cold shooting led to a score of 22-8 eight minutes into the game.  With the game getting dangerously out of reach, the Cardinals got back to basics and came up with four offensive rebounds as well as some sharp shooting to get the deficit to five.

The Cards continued to chip away at the lead and went up in the final minute to go into the locker room leading 40-37.  Pat Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) led CUA at the half with 14 points and five rebounds.  The story of the first twenty minutes, however, was the Cardinals' dominance on the glass.  Dwyer's five rebounds combined with seven by Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and a handful from Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) helped give CUA the 23-8 advantage.

CUA started with the lead in the second half and never surrendered.  Wheeler and Fumai fueled the second half down low for the Cardinals as they eventually go the lead to 18 points with two minutes to go.

The Knights threw up desperation shots as the seconds ticked off of the clock and in the end CUA nabbed the 85-73 victory.  Dwyer led all scorers with 23 points and 13 rebounds.  Wheeler put down 13 points in the second half to finish with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Fumai added 12 in the second to end the game scoring 21 points and bringing down a team-high 14 rebounds.  Derahn Patrick scored 18 to lead Neumann.

Catholic University will play in the championship game on Saturday at 8:00 p.m., against the winner of Albright/Adrian.
