WASHINGTON - Catholic University men's basketball battled the Salisbury (12-11, 7-7 CAC) Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center and come out with the 74-72 win which keeps them in the hunt for some of the top spots in the Capital Athletic Conference.  The win improves the squad to 17-5 for the season and 9-5 in the CAC which ties them for third.

The Cardinals trailed for most of the first half largely in part to the hot hand of Segun Odumeru from Salisbury.  The senior had 11 points in the first half.  With three minutes left in the first Patrick Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) laid in a shot to put the Cards up by one giving them the lead for the remainder of the half.  CUA managed to get up by as much as seven making it 36-29 going into the locker room.

The low post combination of Dwyer and Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) accounted for an even 24 points which led the Cards.  Dwyer pulled down seven rebounds while Wheeler had six as the two seniors dominated the paint in the first half.  CUA outrebounded Salisbury 26-19 and outshot them 30-44 percent.

The second half was much like the first as the Sea Gulls came out fired up quickly tying it up.  Neither team could get a firm grasp on the lead until five minutes left with the score tied at 56.  Mike Wasilenko (Washington Township, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) hit a huge three to put CUA up and spark a run that would give the Cards an eleven point lead with less than two minutes to play.  However, in those final minutes Ray Williams scored seven points and the Cards struggled from the line allowing Salisbury to get dangerously close.  However despite a pair of missed free throws the Cardinals escaped with the 74-72 victory.

Dwyer led CUA with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Wheeler added 20 points and 11 rebounds showing what a dominant presence the pair has in the post.  Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) added 10 and Wasilenko had eight assists for the game.  CUA outrebounded Salisbury 46-39 and outshot them 44-35 percent.

The Cards will take the short trip to Gallaudet on Wednesday for a match-up at 8:00 p.m.  CUA will be trying to avenge a loss earlier this season.
