Lincoln Eliminates CUA From NCAA Tournament
Olivero and Wheeler each put up 18 points

WASHINGTON - Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) and Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) each scored 18 points but neither effort was enough to get the victory for the Catholic University men's basketball squad Saturday night at the DuFour Center.  With the 81-70 loss to the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania Lions (20-8) CUA was eliminated from the NCAA tournament and finished the season 23-6.

In the first half, neither team could get a firm grasp on the lead resulting in five lead changes and three ties.  The Cards were never up by more than four and Lincoln managed to lead by as much as six points.  Darryl White hit a jumper with seven second left in the half to put the Lions up 38-33 going into the locker room.  The small deficit was not a major concern for the Cards who were 7-2 trailing at the break.

Wheeler led all scorers in the first with 12 points and seven rebounds while White had 10 and seven respectively for Lincoln.  The Lions had the hot hands in the first shooting 46.9 percent from the field, 45.5 percent from three and 100 percent from the line.  The Cards, on the other hand, shot 37.5 from the field, 28.6 from beyond the arc and 70 percent on free throws.

Lincoln scored the first four points of the second half to go up by nine and despite solid scoring from Wheeler and Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) it looked as if Lincoln would hold onto the lead.  However, at 13:41 freshman reserve Jeff Sparrow (Reading, Pa./Daniel Boone) hit a three on the left side to bring the Cards within three.  CUA tied it up twice but in just twenty seconds Kenyon Johnson stole the momentum sinking back to back three's at the top of the key to quiet the Cards.  Catholic University was unable to make another run at it and eventually fell 81-70.

Wheeler and Olivero each led CUA with 18, Wheeler also added a team-high eight rebounds.  Patrick Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) scored 12 points and had six rebounds.  White dominated for Lincoln scoring 18 points and pulling in 15 boards.   Lincoln shot even better in the second half finishing at 47.8 percent while CUA stayed roughly the same.  The Cards were also outrebounded 48-34.

CUA finished the season 23-6 which gives them their tenth straight twenty-win season.  The squad graduates six seniors but will return a solid corps of veterans.
