Cardinals will return home next weekend

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Catholic University men's basketball team (8-14, 2-9 Landmark Conference) had another tough Landmark Conference afternoon on Sunday with a 74-61 loss to the first place Susquehanna University Crusaders (12-9, 9-2 Landmark Conference).  The defeat clinched a postseason berth for SU but also finished CUA's chances at the Landmark Conference tournament.

The Cards held the lead briefly in the first half but a 14-0 run at the 16 minute mark gave Susquehanna the spark it needed.  From that point there was no opportunity for CUA to make up the deficit as the Crusaders continued to hit shots.  At the break the Cards were down 39-20.

The first half was tough for CUA as they scored just 20 points and shot 25 percent from the field.  Without the shooting slump, the Cardinals would have been in good shape down low outrebounding Susquehanna 20-19.  However, the Crusaders played almost a perfect half with just one turnover while the Cards committed seven.  Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led CUA with five points while Josh Robinson had 12 for Susquehanna.

The first half started bad for the Cardinals as they went down by as much as 24, however, things began to change at 17:05.  CUA staged a 19-2 run to cut the lead to seven, it was fueled by five three's including two from R.J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) and as many from Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson).  Once the Cards had made it a game again they got within five but the Crusader defense stopped any more long-range attacks and managed to hold on for the 74-61 win.

Banzhaf led the Cards with 16 points as well as seven rebounds while Wes Parker (Germantown, Md./Northwest) added 11 points and six boards.  CUA was outrebounded 39-36 and had five more turnovers.  The Cards were also outshot 43-36 percent.  Robinson led Susquehanna with 27 points.

The Cards will finish out their home schedule next weekend with a Saturday/Sunday Landmark doubleheader.  On Saturday CUA will face Scranton at 7:30 p.m., at the DuFour Center.
