CUA hits the road for season-opening tournament this weekend

WASHINGTON – The CUA men's basketball team heads to Meadville, Pa. this weekend as the Cardinals begin their regular season at the Allegheny Invitational on the campus of Allegheny College.  CUA will take on Fredonia State in the tournament opener on Saturday evening.

CUA has already played once this season, as the Cardinals enjoyed a historic trip to South Bend, Ind. and took on BIG EAST member Notre Dame for the first time in school history on November 6.  CUA played well in the exhibition against the Fighting Irish, trailing by only eight points with seven minutes to play in the opening half.  The Cardinals ultimately fell to Notre Dame 72-47, but not before they made a lifetime of memories.

Senior R.J. Dixon led CUA with 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting in the contest, while classmate Jason Banzhaf added nine points and a team-best five rebounds.  That pair figures to lead a Cardinals team that returns all five starters from a year ago and was picked first in the Landmark Conference preseason poll.

Saturday's game begins a tough opening stretch to the season for CUA as it will play six of its first seven contests away from home.

The Cardinals and Gators will get things started at 6:00 on Saturday evening with tournament host Allegheny taking on Pitt-Greensburg in the second game later that night.  The consolation game of the tournament will take place beginning at 1:00 on Sunday, with the tournament championship slated for 3.

Allegheny will provide live stats of each game throughout the weekend.
