Ryan Hyland enters his third year as an assistant coach for the Cardinals in 2013-14. Hyland’s contributions to every facet of the Catholic University basketball program are a major reason why the 2012-13 Cardinals received the Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year award.

Hyland coordinates CUA’s nationwide recruiting efforts and handles day-to-day operations. He’s also in charge of individual in-season player workouts and works closely with Cardinal guards. He helped two Cards earn All-Landmark Conference honors last season: Shawn Holmes (first team) and Steve Limberiou (second team). CUA finished No. 1 in the nation in assist/turnover ratio and No. 2 in fewest turnovers.

Hyland did it all for the Cardinals from 2007-11, serving as a manager, player and student assistant coach. He supervised three managers, helped organize and run the CUA Classic, and contributed to recruiting, game-plan preparation, team travel and summer camps. He also assisted with the school’s intramural program and served as an English teacher in Rome when he studied abroad in 2010.

The Cards were 67-43 (.609) during his student tenure, won four tournament titles and made three postseason appearances. He played in three games, including the Cardinals’ 2010 exhibition contest at Notre Dame.

In addition to coaching at CUA’s Cardinal Basketball Academy, Hyland has worked at a number of prestigious basketball camps, including those hosted by Billy Donovan (Florida), Norm Roberts (St. John’s), Josh Pastner (Memphis), Kyle Smith (Columbia) and John Beilein (Michigan).

Hyland played four years (2003-07) of basketball, soccer and baseball at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a part-time starter in basketball as a junior and senior, and the Blue Devils won the Ivy Prep League championship both years. In soccer he started his final two seasons and was named honorable mention All-Ivy Prep as a senior. He was a co-captain of both teams his final season.

In addition, Hyland was a part-time starting right fielder for three seasons. Poly Prep won the league baseball title his final two years and captured the 2007 New York State Association of Independent Schools state championship with a 28-0 record. One of his teammates, Kevin Heller, plays for the Boston Red Sox AA affiliate in Portland, Maine.

Ryan Christopher Hyland, from Breezy Point, N.Y., was born in New York City in 1989 and lives in Washington, D.C. He graduated from The Catholic University of America in 2011 with a degree in psychology and is working toward a master of science in business analysis. His brother, TJ, is a senior head manager and student assistant coach.
