Men's Golf Sets New Best Score, Finishes Fifth

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Catholic University men's golf team set two new program bests on Monday afternoon at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational, carding a new lowest score of 301 (+17) for its best event finish, tied 5th out of 17 competing teams.

The 301 is now the lowest score in the program's young history, beating the previous low score of 322 by twenty-one strokes. The fifth place finish sets a new benchmark for head coach Ed Dolan and his team as well, beating a couple of sixth place results so far this season. As a group, the Cardinals made 15 birdies.

Three Catholic golfers set career best scores on the Bent Creek Country Club course (Par 71, 6434 yards). Sophomore Matthew Laurendeau and freshman Zach Mueller set the pace for the Cardinals, each carding a 72 (+1), tying for 8th place out of 88 golfers. Laurendeau knocked five shots off his previous low score of 77 at this past weekend's Revolutionary Collegiate Classic. Mueller's 72 beats his previous best of 81 at the Penn State Harrisburg Fall Invitational.

Freshman Alex Freedman (78, +7) finished tied for 44th in a tightly-packed leaderboard. Junior Anthony Ricci's 79 score blew past his previous best of 92 at the Elizabethtown Invitational. Freshman Ryan Hannigan did not compete due to injury.

"It was a solid team performance highlighted by Laurendeau and Mueller shooting 72. Freedman's 78 and Ricci's 79 helped keep the positive momentum," Dolan said. "With Hannigan forced to withdraw with an injury, the guys knew that they had to step up, and they did. The team was excited to see that their practice efforts are starting to pay off."

Franklin & Marshall took first with an even par 284 score in the event. Catholic outshot Landmark foe Moravian by a dozen strokes, as the Greyhounds finished with a 313 score.

After Monday's action, Catholic will participate in the Landmark Fall Invitational in Harrisburg, Pa. on Saturday, October 20.
