CUA meets Gophers on Wednesday in conference tournament

WASHINGTON – The 2012 postseason gets underway on Wednesday afternoon when CUA makes the short trek to face No. 10 Goucher in the Landmark Conference Tournament.  The Cardinals and Gophers will be meeting for the second time in three seasons in the tournament.

CUA enters the tournament with an overall record of 9-5 and a conference mark of 3-3.  The Cardinals last six games have come against conference opponents, including a 14-10 setback at Goucher on April 14.

In CUA's last game, senior Chris Fuccillo netted his 146th career goal, which ties him with Conor Kelly for the most in school history.  Fuccillo leads the Cardinals with 41 goals and 48 points this season.

Along with Fuccillo, Brendan Englert (28), Marc Saxton (22), Tyler Catalani (15), Sean Cummins (12) and Brian Keith (11) have scored double-digit goals, with Englert and Keith leading the squad in assists with nine.

Senior Tom Scotto has won 122 of 243 face-offs this season, while Will Horne has added 19 wins.  Scotto also paces the red and black in ground balls with 70, while Ryan Doyle has caused a team-leading 17 turnovers.

In goal for CUA, junior Patrick Pfaff has started all 14 games and stopped 166 shots in over 700 minutes of action.  Mark Destro has seen time in seven games, making 27 stops during that time.

CUA faces a tough Goucher squad on Wednesday, a team that has not lost since February 29, a span of 12 games.  The Gophers went a perfect 6-0 in the Landmark during the regular season, including a dominant 14-3 win at Merchant Marine Academy this past weekend.

Five Gophers have scored at least 21 goals this season, led by Kyle Boncaro with 51 and Rory Averett with 43.  Matt Lynch is the team leader in assists with 31, while D.J. Shelton has won 157 of 268 face-offs and scooped up 71 ground balls.

Connor Mishaw has started all 16 games in goal for Goucher, stopping 66.2% of the shots he's faced in 877 minutes.  Mishaw has recorded 147 saves in 2012 and sports a 5.13 goals against average.

This will be CUA's third consecutive appearance in the Landmark Conference Tournament.  The Cardinals advanced to the title game in 2010.

Wednesday's game will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Towson, Md.  The winner advances to Saturday's championship game to take on the winner of the Drew-Scranton semifinal.
