Cardinals pick up 12-10 win over Saints in home opener

WASHINGTON – CUA made its 2012 home opener a successful one, by downing Marymount 12-10 on Thursday inside Cardinal Stadium.  The Cardinals trailed 6-4 after one quarter, but once again, a strong third quarter paved the way for a CUA win.  Chris Fuccillo found the back of the net five times for the victorious Cardinals.

Marymount struck first, only 14 seconds into the game when George Pugh found the back of the net for a 1-0 Saints lead.

Marc Saxton responded with a goal two minutes later for CUA to tie things at one.

Fuccillo's first goal of the night came with 10:36 to play in the opening quarter, and it gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.  Two minutes later, Brendan Englert made it 3-1 CUA when he scored.

Eric Martin cut CUA's lead to 3-2 when he scored at the 7:22 mark, but Englert pushed the lead back up two less than a minute later.

David Huson's score at the 5:37 mark then brought the Saints to within one at 4-3.

Lance Bernecker's goal with 3:50 to play before halftime tied things at four, and Mike Smith followed with a goal of his own to give the visitors a 5-4 advantage.

Connor Kellogg closed the first quarter scoring with a goal at the 3:04 mark as the Saints took a 6-4 lead into the second.

A man-up goal by Fuccillo early in the second pulled the Cardinals to within one, and after he netted his third score of the night at the 12:11 mark, the score was tied at six.

Marymount went back in front when Martin scored with 11:18 to play before halftime, but Saxton answered with a goal at the 8:20 mark to knot things at 7.

Bernecker's goal with 5:19 to play gave the visitors an 8-7 advantage, which is how things remained heading into halftime.

Early in the third, Englert tied things at 8 when he scored with 12:50 on the clock.

The teams then went over ten minutes without scoring, before Fuccillo found the back of the net at the 1:47 mark to give the Cardinals a 9-8 lead after three quarters.

Fuccillo scored again, this time with 13 minutes to play in the game, to give CUA a two-goal advantage, but Kellogg answered for Marymount to make it a one-goal affair.

Bernecker tied things at 10 with a goal at the 10:33 mark, but less than two minutes later Saxton found the back of the net to give CUA the lead once again.

Brian Keith's goal with 3:29 then sealed the win for the Cardinals.

CUA finished with a 49-34 advantage in shots and a 43-22 advantage in ground balls.  Ryan McDonough led the Cardinals with six ground balls, while Englert picked up five.

Tom Scotto won 9 of 16 face-offs for the Cardinals and Jack Drexel was the team leader in caused turnovers with three.  Patrick Pfaff got the start in goal and stopped seven shots, before giving way to Mark Destro, who sent back eight shots.
