WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's lacrosse freshman Tommy Welch led five different goal scorers with two, but Christopher Newport scored the game's first five goals as the 15th-ranked Captains posted a 14-6 victory Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.

Catholic (4-5) was outshot for the first time in nine games this season and committed a season-high 32 turnovers after totaling a season-low nine last time out Wednesday against Berry.

Freshman Mike McShea shined for the Cardinals, winning 18-of-24 faceoffs, including nine of 10 in the second half, while totaling 11 ground balls. Freshman Brendan Dulin had two caused turnovers.

The Captains (6-2) led 5-1 after the first quarter and 9-2 in the second before junior Mark Tocchio scored with just nine seconds left to pull Catholic within six at the break.

Welch scored his second goal of the game in the third quarter while senior Colin Eustace and freshman Andrew Robertello each netted their second goals of the season to provide the final margin.

Junior Alex Mulyk made seven saves in 52 minutes before sophomore Kevin Malone and freshman Owen Hopkins each made one save over the final eight.

The Cardinals open Landmark Conference play next Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Elizabethtown for a 1 p.m., faceoff.
