CUA loses its first game of 2007 to the #1 team in the nation

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's lacrosse squad (0-1, 0-1 Capital Athletic Conference) couldn't have chosen a tougher team to beat for their first game of the season than the Salisbury Sea Gulls (3-0, 2-0 CAC).  The #1 Sea Gulls defeated CUA 24-2 in Maryland Friday afternoon dropping the Cards to 0-1 for the season before they fly south for spring training this upcoming week.

Salisbury scored 14 unanswered through the first and second quarters before the Cards were able to find the back of the cage at 3:44 in the second.  Freshman Paul Sutton (Havertown, Pa./St. Joseph Prep) connected on the first goal of 2007 for CUA while Salisbury was playing a man down.  Sutton's unassisted tally was the first of his collegiate career.

Salisbury continued to challenge the Cardinals' goalkeeper, Greg Kavazanjian (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), through the third with CUA looking at a 22-1 deficit with the time ticking away.  With just four seconds remaining in the quarter, freshman Mike Groh (Walpole, Mass./Xavarian Bros) scored CUA's second goal on an unassisted shot.  This would be the final goal for the Cards who eventually fell 24-2.

Attack Matt Hickman led the Sea Gulls with five goals and Greg Titus added four as the high scorers for Salisbury.  Kavazanjian had 20 saves on the afternoon and took the loss while the three Sea Gull keepers combined for two.  CUA was outshot 66-7 and won seven of 30 face-offs.

The Cards will travel to Florida this week for spring training before returning for a home game versus King's on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
