CUA drops first conference game

MADISON, N.J. - The Catholic University men's lacrosse team lost 14-4 to the Drew University Rangers (3-4, 2-0 Landmark) Saturday afternoon in New Jersey.  The Cardinals struggled to find the back of the net despite just a 49-42 shot differential.  With the loss CUA drops to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the Landmark Conference.

Drew outscored CUA in the first quarter after getting off to a quick three-goal lead.  At 3:19 Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's) hit an unassisted shot to make it 3-1.  In the second quarter, Drew added two more goals before CUA could answer.  At 5:59 Pat Duffer (Yardly, Pa./Notre Dame) made the score 5-2 but the momentum quickly went back to Drew who found the back of the net once more to make the deficit four at the break.

The third quarter was tough for the Cards as they failed to score and allowed four Ranger goals.  Things didn't get much better with Drew hitting five more to start the fourth capping a 9-0 run in the second half.  In the closing four minutes, Josh Volpe (Newton, Pa./Notre Dame) and Brant both scored but it wouldn't be enough as CUA fell 14-4.

Brant led the Cards with two goals and a pair of Rangers combined for 10 of the squad's 14 scores.  Drew out shot CUA 49-42 and had seven more ground balls.  Greg Kavazanjian (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) took the loss in goal playing 55:13.  He had 18 saves in the game.

The Cardinals will host Marymount on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
