CUA leads at the half

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss at the hands of the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (6-6, 2-2 Landmark) Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.  CUA started out strong but allowed a pair of fourth quarter goals that decided the Landmark Conference game.  The Cardinals are now 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the Landmark Conference.

The Cards got off to a great start finding the back of the cage twice in the first five minutes of play and dominating the offensive play.  Tim Rettaliata (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) netted the first score and Jimmy Sinnott (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle) made it 2-0 with 10:49 to go in the first.  After almost five solid minutes on CUA's end of the field, USMMA started to answer back late in the first.  At 1:55 the Mariners made it 2-1.

The second quarter started out just as strong for the Cardinals as they once again accumulated two quick goals.  Pat Duffner (Yardly, Pa./Notre Dame) fired a shot past the keeper at 9:13 and Sinnott added his second less than a minute later on a man up opportunity.  Unfortunately, the Mariners came back with a pair of their own. With six minutes remaining, CUA once again put two into the back of the net from Duffner and Retaliatta but in the closing minutes USMMA managed to respond making it 6-5 in favor of the Cards at the half.

The third quarter was quiet for CUA as the team took just five shots and allowed one Mariner goal to tie it going into the final period.  USMMA took its first lead of the game just two minutes into the fourth and made the advantage two with seven minutes to go as the Cardinals were forced to play from behind.  CUA didn't stop shooting, however, making for a wild final push.  Mike Scotto (Belmar, N.J./St Rose) brought the Cards within one with four minutes to go but CUA couldn't tie it up despite opportunities as the team fell 8-7.

Three players had a pair of goals for the Cards, Duffner led the way with two goals and an assist.  In goal, Greg Kavazanjian (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) had 18 saves for the game despite the loss.  The Cards were out shot 33-25 and had a tough day on face-offs getting just 7 of 17.

CUA will face Goucher on Wednesday in another Landmark Conference tilt.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., in Towson, Md.
