Cards Drop Heartbreaker to Drew
WASHINGTON- In an down-to-the-wire overtime contest Saturday afternoon, the Catholic University of America men's lacrosse suffered a 7-6 setback to Drew University at Cardinal Stadium. CUA's record drops to 5-4, 0-1 Landmark, while Drew improves to 4-4, 1-0 Landmark.
Chris Fuccillo (Patchogue, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led the offensive attack for the Cards, recording a team high of two goals to go along with four groundballs and one draw control. Mark Saxton (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's), Casey Glad (University Park, TX/Highland Park), and Jimmy Sinnott (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle) each scored one goal apiece in the loss. Rob Ryan (Milton, MA/Milton) led the squad's defensive efforts with five groundballs and four caused turnovers, while goaltender Sean McKenna (Rockville,Md./Good Counsel) recorded 8 saves in the net for CUA.
The Cards allowed Drew to score twice in the opening minutes of the game, but Brant's goal at the 1:58 mark put the team on the board before the end of the quarter. Glad then connected with Fuccillo to tie the game at two in the second stanza. The two hungry teams then traded goals before Drew scored twice in the closing minutes of the quarter to give the Rangers a 5-3 advantage.
CUA responded in the third period to tie the game once again, and took their first lead of the game with 13:49 left in the fourth. Drew was able to tie things up to force the overtime, and a Sean McNulty goal with 47 seconds left in the extra period gave Drew the 7-6 edge.
The Cardinals will look to get back to their winning ways on Wednesday, April 1st, as they host Shenandoah for a 4 p.m., non-conference game.
