Ardolino's overtime goal lifts CUA to dramatic win over Bobcats

WASHINGTON – CUA moved to 2-0 with an exhilarating 8-7 overtime win over Frostburg State on Saturday inside Cardinal Stadium.  Trailing 7-6 with one minute remaining in regulation CUA's Tyler Catalini scored the game-tying goal to send the teams into OT and Will Ardolino then finished off the Bobcats with his score at the 3:26 mark of the extra session.

CUA trailed 4-0 in this one after Frostburg State netted the first four scores over the opening 16:32 of play.  The Cardinals stormed back though with four straight goals to tie things at four at halftime.

Catalani scored twice during the run, while Brenden Englert and Bobby Kusbit also got into the act.

Chris Fuccillo then began the third quarter with his fourth score of the season to give CUA its first lead of the afternoon at 5-4.  With nearly ten minutes gone in the quarter Englert scored his second goal of the day as the Cardinals went on top 6-4.

Dan Dowd finally put an end to CUA's run when he found the back of the net with 1:20 remaining in the third to pull the Bobcats within one, 6-5.

Early in the fourth Ryan Serlo tied things at six with his goal, which came off a feed from Phil Hess, and the score remained that way for the next 13 minutes.  With 1:32 remaining Frostburg State's Dan Dowd scored an unassisted goal to put the visitors on top 7-6 and it looked as though the Bobcats would come away with the win.

But Catalani had other ideas as he took a feed from Englert and beat Frostburg State goalkeeper Tyler Haines for a goal with exactly one minute to play, sending the Cardinals faithful into a frenzy.

The teams then headed for overtime where nearly the entire four minutes had elapsed in the extra session before Ardolino ripped a shot into the net for the dramatic game-winner.

CUA registered 31 shots on the afternoon, while Frostburg State was credited with 28.  The Cardinals scooped up 40 ground balls during the game, led by Tom Scotto with eight and Rob Ryan with six and the Bobcats totaled 25.

In the X for CUA, Scotto won 11 of 17 and in goal Sean McKenna sent back 12 shots, including six in the final quarter.  Ryan Doyle had a big day on defense with four caused turnovers and Ryan caused three.

Catalani finished with three scores for CUA and Englert totaled two and an assist.

In goal for the visitors Haines recorded eight saves, while Brad Miller was the team leader in caused turnovers with four.

On Monday, CUA will entertain Adrian inside Cardinal Stadium underneath the lights.  The opening face-off is slated for 7 p.m.
