Cardinals race past Greyhounds 4-0 in conference opener

WASHINGTON – CUA opened its Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday by breezing past Moravian 4-0 inside Cardinal Stadium.  Mike Brennan scored twice for the Cardinals, while Hunter Horvath and Ben Fernandez added scores to help CUA improve to 5-3 on the year. Moravian falls to 1-7 following the setback.

During the early going CUA was aggressive, taking four shots in a span of 1:07 as the Cardinals looked to grab an early lead.

In the 16th minute Brennan did just that, taking a pass from Ian Smith and finding the back of the net for a 1-0 Cardinals advantage.

With over 26 minutes gone, Horvath made it 2-0 CUA when he scored off another assist from Smith.

From there CUA's defense limited Moravian to just two shots for the remainder of the half, both of which Torsten Meuschke stopped to preserve the shutout.

CUA took its 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Greyhounds 11-7 in the opening 45 minutes.

Just ten seconds into the second half, Brennan looked to add to the Cardinals lead, but his shot went wide.  A minute later Earl Hamilton got off a shot of his own, but Mike Brand made the save.

The shots continued for CUA and at the 46:30 mark Fernandez knocked in a rebound to put the Cardinals comfortably ahead, 3-0.

Brennan's second goal of the afternoon came in the 60th minute and all but sealed the win for CUA.  Mike DiMarco assisted on the score and from there both teams began running in plenty of substitutions for the remainder of the match.

The Cardinals finished the day with 23 shots, while Moravian was credited with ten. CUA had eight more corner kicks than the Greyhounds (9-1) and in goal Meuschke sent back four shots and Cam McGrory made one save.

CUA now hits the road for three straight, beginning with a trip to Susquehanna on Saturday, October 1.  Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
