Romano named Defensive POY; four named All-Conference

WASHINGTON – CUA placed four student-athletes on the All-Landmark Conference Teams on Tuesday, and junior Kevin Romano was named the Defensive Player of the Year.  Joining Romano on the First Team are Mike Brennan and Hunter Horvath, while Ben Fernandez garnered Second Team accolades.

Romano earns his second consecutive First Team honor, while becoming CUA's first Defensive Player of the Year in the Landmark Conference.  The New Jersey native started 16 matches this season and totaled two goals and three assists.  Two of his goals went for game-winners, including against nationally-ranked Scranton on October 20.

With Romano leading the way, CUA shutout seven opponents, including a string of four straight to close the regular season.  The Cardinals held eight opponents to 10 or fewer shots this season with a low of four against Shenandoah.

Last year's Offensive Player of the Year, Brennan had another strong season for the Cards, totaling team highs in goals (7), assists (4) and points (12).  Brennan netted three game-winning goals, including in the regular season finale at Drew, and he registered seven of his 12 points vs. conference foes.

Brennan was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week on October 29 and he finishes his CUA career with 28 goals and 68 points in 79 matches.

Horvath earns his first First Team selection, after garnering Second Team honors a season ago.  The native of Texas saw time in 18 matches this year and totaled three goals and seven points.  Horvath netted the game-winner vs. conference foe Moravian and he scored twice in another conference win, this one coming against Goucher.

In two seasons at CUA, Horvath has totaled four goals and 11 points in 36 matches.

Fernandez earns his first career All-Conference selection after appearing in 19 matches on defense this season.  The junior scored two goals, including the game-winner vs. Goucher, and helped the Cardinals hold conference opponents to a mere 0.86 goals in seven matches.

Fernandez has appeared in 56 matches during his time at CUA, and registered seven goals and 15 points.

Also on Tuesday, the NSCAA released its final regular season regional rankings for 2012, and CUA checked in at No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic.  This marks the third straight week in which the Cardinals have been regionally ranked.
