CUA advances to championship match with 2-1 win over Vassar

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Cardinals advanced to the championship of the Rowan University Invitational on Friday with a 2-1 win over Vassar (3-1).  Mike Brennan and Ian Smith netted goals for CUA (2-1), to help the Cards win their second straight match.

CUA had several chances in the early going, with Justin Oloriz taking a shot 5:39 into the match that sailed wide.

At the 15:07 mark of the opening half, Hunter Horvath headed a ball towards the Vassar goal, but it also was wide.

Smith's shot less than a minute later was saved by Gary Claus, as was Horvath's at the 17:09 mark.

CUA kept coming though, and Brennan got the Cardinals on the board with his first goal of the season at the 17:21 mark.  Kevin Romano assisted on the score.

That proved to be the only goal of the opening 45 minutes.

An Earl Hamilton shot during the early portion of the second half was stopped by Claus, keeping it a one-goal affair.

Brennan looked for his second score of the day with an attempt at the 57:19 mark, but his shot went wide.

Both defenses played tough throughout the second half, with the two teams combining for only eight shots.

Smith broke the scoreless streak with his fourth goal of the year at the 82:47 mark off an assist by Paul Lewis.  That made it 2-0 CUA, but Vassar was able to hang around and received a late goal from Gavin Jennings to make things interesting down the stretch.

Vassar was awarded a corner kick with less than two minutes remaining, but nothing came of it, and CUA advanced to the championship.

The Cardinals doubled up Vassar in shots, finishing with a 14-7 advantage, while Vassar was awarded seven of the match's 10 corner kicks.

Torsten Meuschke earned the win in goal for CUA after stopping three shots, and Claus sent back seven shots.

On Saturday, CUA will take on tournament host Rowan at 4:30 p.m. in the championship match.  Vassar will face John Jay in the consolation match.
