Men’s Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Non-Conference Win Over Mary Washington

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University men's soccer team was able to withstand the heat en route to a 1-0 victory over visiting Mary Washington on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in Washington, D.C.

The first half was evenly played as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. Catholic held a 5-3 advantage in shots at halftime.

Catholic began the second half looking to apply more pressure on the Eagle's backline and created several scoring opportunities. There were 20 fouls in the game, Catholic had 12 to Mary Washington's 8. Fouls proved to be big in the game, as the Cardinals took advantage of a free kick in Eagle territory. Nico Bartolomeo (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) lined up from 35 yards out just near the left sideline and fired a shot past the Mary Washington keeper to put the Cards up 1-0 at the 65:57 mark, proving to be the game-winner.

The Cardinals had a great chance to add some cushion to their lead with under a minute to play when a Mary Washington foul led to yet another free kick for the black and red. Ian Smith's (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) shot sailed just high of the goal as the Cardinals hung on for the win.

The Catholic back line did an excellent job limiting the eagles to just five shots all game, none of which were on goal, as Torsten Meuschke (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) picked up his second shutout of the season.

The Cardinals (3-1-1) return to action to take on Messiah (4-0), the defending National Champions, on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
