WASHINGTON – Ethan DaPonte headed home a free kick to lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over Washington College on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Chestertown, Md.

Washington College got on the board first as Sam Wild scored an unassisted goal in the 44th minute to put the Shoremen up 1-0 heading into the intermission. The Shoremen were the aggressors in the first half, holding a 7-to-2 advantage in shots.

At the 57:14 mark, Alex LaPrade (Lincoln, R.I./LaSalle) evened up the score at 1-1, when he ripped a shot from 30 yards out into the lower right corner.

Washington took the lead again in the 74th minute as Drew Thompson was able to get past Cam McGrory (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) for a 2-1 score.

The Cardinals bounced back seven minutes later as Kevin Romano (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) crossed a ball into the box to Ben Fleri (College Park, Md./DeMatha) who connected on a header for his first goal of the season to force a 2-2 tie.

With under three minutes to play in the game, the Cardinals drew a foul setting up an Ian Smith (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) free kick. Smith sent a perfect ball into the Shoremen box and found DaPonte  who headed the ball past the Washington keeper for the game-winning goal with 87:45 on the clock.

The Cardinals outshot the Shoremen 12-to-9 in the second half, connecting on three of those attempts. For the game, Washington drew five corner kicks to Catholic’s three.

McGrory picked up his third win of the year and registered eight saves during the game.

The Cardinals (5-3-1) return to action this Saturday, Sept. 28 during Homecoming for their Landmark Conference opener against Drew (6-2), slated to kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
