Martin, Tashjy Guide Catholic to 1-1 Draw with No. 18 Haverford

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men's soccer team played No. 18 Haverford College to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals trailed the Fords 1-0 after the first 10 minutes but junior Tyler Martin lobbed the ball into the net in the 27th minute to equalize the game.

Martin took a solo run down the middle through three Haverford defenders bringing himself just outside the 18-yard box on the right side. Martin took a right footed shot, lifting the ball over the keepers' head into the top left corner to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard.

The nationally ranked Fords put pressure on the Cardinal's defense in the second half taking seven shots. On defense, junior Corbin Brailsford and freshman Nick Battaglia along with sophomores Ryan Kennedy and Mike Narzikul worked together to keep the Haverford offense in check. Graduate student, goalkeeper Zachery Tashjy stopped all four, second half shots on goal.

Haverford maintained possession during overtime outshooting the Catholic 7-0 in 20 minutes. With time running out, the Fords started firing at the target but the Cards did not plan to surrender. Tashjy stretched out for an outstanding four saves in three minutes and the Cardinals ran out the clock for the draw.

The Cardinals return to the nation's capital to take on St. Mary's College of Maryland in a home match at 4:00 p.m., on Thursday, September 10.
