Elizabethtown, Pa. - In the Landmark Conference semifinal match, The Catholic University of America men’s soccer team played Elizabethtown College to a scoreless draw but fell 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout. The Cardinals finish their season with a 7-7-5 overall record as the Blue Jays advance to the Landmark Conference Finals on a 10-6-2 season.
The battle of the birds was evenly matched as the Cardinals outshot the Blue Jays 9-7 in regulation while the Jays finished the 110-minute draw with a 13-9 shot advantage. Catholic graduate student Zachery Tashjy made four saves in the contest while E-town keeper Brian Gatley made three.
Senior Heston Priestley led the Cardinals with three shots throughout the event and converted Catholic’s first penalty kick during the shootout.
Priestley got Catholic started early with the first shot on goal of the match in the third minute. Freshman Nelson Zimmerman took his attempt next in the 14th minute but the Cardinals were unable to find their way on the scoreboard. Catholic's final shot on goal of the night came in the 57th minute from senior Patrick Mogan.
In the opening round of the shootout, Tashjy put a stop to Elizabethtown’s leading goal scorer Gilbert Waso. Priestley along with sophomore Bradley Pierro found the back of the net during their turn at the line. Gatley did not let any additional Catholic shots though and with three PKs made, Elizabethtown punched its ticket to the league finals.
