Men's Soccer Picked Third in Landmark Preseason Poll

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men's soccer team has been selected third in the Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Drew University earned the No. 1 ranking followed by Elizabethtown College.

Returning to the pitch for the Cardinals this season is 2017 First Team All-Landmark selection junior Mike Narzikul as well as second team picks senior Brian Galfond and sophomore Nelson Zimmerman. Midfielders Bradley Pierro, Aaron Boyle, and Tyler Martin also return after playing in almost every match for the Cards.

The Cards kick off their season with the 3rd annual "Turk" Emekli D.C. Classic on Friday, August 31, in a match against Ursinus College at 7 p.m.

Catholic hosts Baruch College in the second game of the "Turk" on Saturday before the Cardinals head up to New York for two away matches against Buffalo State (9/7) and Fredonia State (9/8).

Landmark Conference competition begins at home for the Cardinals as they take on Scranton on Saturday, September 22 at 1 p.m. In their last regular season match of the season, the Cards host Elizabethtown on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m. The contest is a rematch of last year's conference playoff semifinal matchup.

Catholic head Coach Travis Beauchamp has added 12 newcomers to the roster for the upcoming season.

Galfond, also a CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team member, led the Catholic offense with 13 points on five goals and three assists. He notched the game-winner against conference rival the University of Scranton. Hailing from Gaithersburg, Md., Galfond started 17 games and made 19 appearances.

Zimmerman shined in his freshman year in the midfield, with all four of his goals coming as game-winners. He appeared in all 19 matches and picked up two assists.

Narzikul made his impact felt all over the field as an outside defender for the Cardinals in his All-Landmark sophomore campaign. Starting in 18 of the 19 games, the Media, Pa. native had two assists and took 27 shots while challenging opposing forwards on the defensive end.
