WASHINGTON, D.C. - A 51st minute game-winning goal from sophomore forward Ben Alexander led the Catholic University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Drew on Saturday afternoon at Carlini Field.
The No. 20 Cardinals (10-1-1, 2-0 LC) extended its winning streak to five and unbeaten streak to eleven in the rematch of last year's Landmark semifinal.
The hosts controlled the first half of a physical contest in which Catholic outshot the Rangers 7-0 in the first forty-five minutes. The Cardinals' best chance came in the 19th minute when Alexander's back-heel effort was blocked out for a corner kick. It was scoreless at the intermission.
Shortly into the second half, Catholic broke the deadlock with a 51st minute from its leading goalscorer. Sophomore midfielder Paul Egan gathered the ball on the left side of the penalty area and put a wonderful cross towards the back post.
Alexander collected with a clean first touch and slotted his shot past the Drew goalkeeper for the goal. After today's match, the Bel Air, Md. native sits tied for the lead in the Landmark Conference in goals (8) and points (18).
The Rangers (4-5-2, 0-1-1 LC) fought for an equalizer in the second half and fired five shots. Junior goalkeeper Jack Long made two impressive saves off shots from Drew's Drini Zenelaj to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
Long's eighth win and seventh clean sheet add to a list of conference-bests between the posts. The Manasquan, N.J. native leads the Landmark in save percentage (.857) and goals against average (0.62).
The Cardinals travel to play local foe Gallaudet on Tuesday, October 8. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
