WASHINGTON - In a cross-division showdown, The Catholic University of America men’s & women’s swimming & diving teams took down Division II Barton College with final scores of 149-113 (W) and 175-83 (M).
Meet got off to an exciting start as the Cardinals swept the 200-medley relays. Freshman Caroline Beal (29.76) led off the women’s foursome followed by seniors Basira Knight (32.76) and Rachel Chain (27.45), respectively. Freshman Morgan James held up the anchor, swimming the freestyle in 26.30 seconds for a first-place time of 1:56.27.
In the men’s race, sophomore Olivier Nguyen (24.94) started with the backstroke followed by classmates George Isaacs (28.35), in the breaststroke, and Kevin Jay (23.70), in the butterfly. Just .18 seconds behind the Bulldogs foursome, freshman Matt Mahon (21.89) swam the final leg to out-touch his opponent by .16 seconds for a winning time of 1:38.88.
James took the tops spots in the 50-freestyle (25.52) and the 100-freestyle (55.54) while junior Emily Messina won the 200-butterfly with a final time of 2:21.57.
The Catholic men swept the 200-butterfly as sophomore Luke Nicholson claimed a winning time of 2:03.09. Senior Peter Bajorek touched for second in 2:07.21 followed by junior David Lanetti (2:07.96) in third.
Junior Sam Hicks hit the wall in 1:48.58 for the number one spot in the men’s 200-freestyle. Isaacs won the 50-freestyle (23.00) while Nguyen took the top spot in the 100-freestyle (49.55) and Jay hit first in the 100-butterfly (54.61).
The Cardinals remain at home when they host Landmark opponent Elizabethtown College on Saturday, November 11, at 1 p.m.
