Catholic Women Sit in Second After Night One of Championships

Boyds, Md. - The Catholic University of America women's swimming and diving team earned 186 points during the opening night of the 2018 Landmark Conference Championships and sit in second place behind Susquehanna University (265).

The Cardinals started the night with a silver medal finish in the 200-freestyle relay as freshman Morgan James led off with a 24.57-second split and her classmate Caroline Beal swam next in 24.21 seconds. Senior Rachel Chain took on the third leg in 24.80 seconds and fellow senior Basira Knight rounded out the relay in 24.25 seconds for a time of 1:37.83.

Sophomore Elizabeth Spernal swam for seventh place in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:24.64. Junior Valerie Sander (5:23.69) swan in the consolation final and finished in 10th place while sophomore Kassi Grumski (5:29.60) finished 15th.

Senior Madison Amann captured sixth place in the 200-individual medley (2:15.14) while freshmen Molly Donnellan (2:16.93), Marie Redoutey (2:20.12), Grace Smith (2:21.23) and Ally Noccioli (2:22.41) touched in for 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th, respectively.

James (24.61) took fourth in the 50-freestyle and Knight (25.26) earned ninth place while Chain (25.40) touched in 11th.

Senior Riley Hawblitzel finished the 3-meter diving event with 287 points, good for fifth place. Sophomore Mackenzie Earley dove for seventh place with 277.55 and freshman Colleen O'Callaghan earned eighth place with a final score of 266.55.

The Cardinals finished off the night with a second place in the 400-medley relay. James (1:02.11) swam backstroke while Knight (1:09.60) swam the breaststroke leg. Junior Rachael Zarlinski (59.41) dove in next for the butterfly leg and Chain (56.07) anchored for a final time of 4:07.49.
