WASHINGTON - Gregory McCarthy of The Catholic University of America has earned a bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III National Swimming & Diving Championships.
McCarthy is the second swimmer under the direction of head coach Paul Waas to attend the DIII Nationals Championships following Lisa Brooks' 2009 appearance. He is the Cardinals' first male swimmer to be invited to Nationals since recent Catholic University Hall of Famer John Cooper qualified in 1997.
Earlier this month McCarthy was honored as the Landmark Conference Swimmer and Rookie of the Year after winning the 200-individual medley (1:50.87), 400-individual medley (3:57.59) and 200-breaststroke (2:04.79) with three NCAA DIII B-Cut times.
McCarthy's three title-winning swims broke the Catholic University programs records while setting a new Landmark meet and conference record.
The rookie from Silver Spring, Md., is set to travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for the National Swimming and Diving Championships that begins on March 21. McCarthy is entered to compete in the 200-individual medley, 400-individual medley and the 200-breaststroke.
With the trip, McCarthy joins an elite list of 13 additional Catholic University men's swimming and diving team member that have qualified for the National Swimming & Diving Championships, including 1965, 200-individual medley (2:05.50) and 400-individual medley (4:31.30) national champion Keats Baugher.
