Cardinals Tabbed to Repeat as Landmark Champions

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The reigning Landmark Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Champions, The Catholic University of America are the No. 1-ranked team in the 2018-19 Landmark Conference preseason coaches' poll, as released by the league on Thursday morning.

The Cardinals received seven first-place votes to earn 70 points in the poll while Susquehanna trailed in second place with 56 points. It is the second time in program history that the Cards have earned the No. 1 spot.

Catholic ran away with the Landmark Conference title for the second consecutive year in February with a final score of 926.50 points. The Cardinals topped the meet by 302 points with Susquehanna earning seconds (624.5) and the University of Scranton taking third (585).

Much of Head Coach Paul Waas' standout swimmers return to the pool to defend their conference title. The 2017-18 men's swimming and diving coach of the year welcomes back several medalwinners that will help along the ten newcomers to this year's squad.

Last season's Rookie of the Year and Swimmer of the Year, Greg McCarthy, returns as a sophomore after a historic freshman season that included three school records, two meet records, one conference record, three conference gold medals, and a NCAA DIII Championships qualification. Other notable returners include senior Sam Hicks, junior Kevin Jay, and sophomores Matt Mahon, Chris Grunbok, and James Verby

Catholic takes on Division II Barton College to begin the season this Friday, October 12 at 4 p.m. in the DuFour pool. The Cardinals compete against Division I Howard University (Jan. 26). The team also participate in the annual Yellow Jacket Midseason Invitational the first weekend in December.

The Landmark Conference Championships are set for February 15-17.
