WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team got its season started against Division II Barton College from North Carolina, falling to the Bulldogs 187-75.
The men opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:41.65. Freshman Jeffery Schriefer-Flores got things started with a 26.43 time. Sophomores Chris Grunbok (29.11) and Gregory McCarthy (24.07) followed, and Matthew Mahon anchored with a 22.04 freestyle time.
McCarthy picked up where he left off after a record-breaking freshman campaign, taking the top spot in the 200-butterfly (2:02.71) and 200-individual medley (2:01.87).
Mahon earned second place in the 50-freestyle sprint (22.86) and third in the 100-freestyle (50.34) to earn points for the Cardinals.
On the boards, Will Chester and Christophe Sanchez-O'Brien competed in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for the first time this season. Chester got a 123.75 score in the 1-meter and 107.3 from 3-meter. Sanchez O-Brien added a 102.08 in the 1-meter.
The team is back in action next Saturday, October 20 at Salisbury at 1 p.m.
