Cardinals face Scranton in conference semifinals on Wednesday

WASHINGTON – After a strong regular season in which it went 13-3 overall and 5-2 in the Landmark Conference, third-seeded CUA begins its quest for a conference championship on Wednesday when the Cardinals travel to Pennsylvania to face No. 2 seed Scranton in the tournament semifinals.

Wednesday's match marks the second time in less than three weeks that CUA and Scranton will get together.  The Royals outlasted the Cardinals 6-3 on April 5 in Scranton, sending CUA to its first conference loss of the season.

Jean Paul Roman and Kyle Kramer earned singles wins for the Cards that day, while Brian Bradley and Jason Quisberth picked up a doubles point.

CUA has a combined team record of 72-24 in singles play this season, good for a .750 winning percentage.  Kramer leads the way with a 14-1 record, including a perfect 7-0 vs. conference foes.

Roman (13-2), Bradley (12-3), Joe Peters (11-5) and Quisberth (11-4) have also won double digit matches, while Cassian Utrie has added nine wins.

In doubles action, the tandem of Roman and Utrie have compiled an 11-4 mark to lead the way, while Bradley and Quisberth check in with an 8-4 record and Kramer and Peters have gone 7-6.

CUA's three losses this year have come against top-notch foes, including Division I Loyola (Md.), as well as conference foes Scranton and Goucher.

Wednesday will be a re-match of last year's conference semifinal, which was won by Scranton 6-1 and also took place in Pa.

Wednesday's match is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from the Royal Courts in Scranton.  In case of inclement weather, the match will move indoors to the Birchwood Fitness and Tennis Club in nearby Clarks Summit.

The winner of Wednesday's match will advance to the conference championship to take on the Moravian – Drew semifinal winner.  The championship is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
