Catholic, Lyons Garner USTFCCCA All-Academic Distinctions

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Both the men's and women's track & field teams at The Catholic University of America were honored Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for outstanding academic achievement in the 2017-18 seasons.

All told, 291 teams were honored as 2017-18 All-Academic Teams for their academics by the USTFCCCA for exceeding at least a 3.00 cumulative team grade point average.

The men's team, led by coach Ian Hankins, posted a 3.46 team GPA, good for 10th in the nation for Division III men's teams.  Coach Joe Fisher's women's team earned the honor with a 3.47 team GPA. Both squads posted the highest marks out of the Landmark Conference institutions.

In addition, Kiera Lyons was honored as a 2018 USTFCCCA All-Academic Individual for her impressive success on and off the track. The Landmark All-Conference member was one of just 627 women to be recognized.

To add on to a strong GPA as a physics major, Lyons set program records in the 5,000 and steeplechase, beat out Division I runners at the U.S. Naval Academy's Spring Invitational in March, and earned her third Landmark Academic Honor Roll award this past season.

To qualify for USTFCCCA Individual All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and must have met at least one of the following athletic standards:

  1. Competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship

  2. Finished the regular season ranked in the national top-50 in an individual event or ranked in the national top-35 in a relay event on the official NCAA Descending Order List.

The highest cumulative GPA of any team belonged to Knox College's women, a 3.80 mark. When it comes to men's teams, MIT had the best GPA of the bunch at 3.63. For additional information about the USTFCCCA, its programs and membership, go to
