Cardinals set to begin action at Landmark Conference Tournament

WASHINGTON - The 2012 Landmark Conference Softball Tournament will take place this weekend on the campus of Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.  The fourth-seeded Cardinals will face top-seed and host Susquehanna on Friday in the tournament's first game, beginning at 11 a.m.

CUA is making its second straight tournament appearance, and fourth overall.  The Cardinals advanced to the championship round of last year's tourney, before falling to Moravian.

The Cardinals are led on offense this season by Amy Laugher, Taylor Stockinger, Megan Rizzi and Rose Shaver.  Laughner leads CUA with a .459 average, while Stockinger and Rizzi are batting .361 and .360, respectively.  Shaver is fourth with a .317 average.

Last weekend, Stockinger moved into the record books by smashing her ninth home run of the season, which set a new single season record at CUA.  The previous mark had been eight, set by Sarah Galloway in 2004.

Stockinger also leads the Cardinals in hits with 43, with Rizzi next in line with 41 and Laughner third with 39.

In the circle, CUA is led by the one-two punch of Kerri Apicella and Erin McMakin.  Apicella has won eight games and is currently sporting a 3.15 earned run average.  The right hander has also struck out 63 batters in 109 innings.

McMakin meanwhile, is 11-4 with a 3.19 ERA, having struck out 86 batters in 109.2 innings.

Susquehanna enters the tournament with a 24-12 overall record, including an 8-2 mark within the conference.  The Crusaders are led offensively by Lisa Finizio (.461) and Kathryn Gilbert (.418), with Brittany Devlin leading the way in RBIs with 32.

Allison Cullen has the lowest ERA of the Susquehanna hurlers at 2.37, while Morgan Lewis has the most strikeouts with 52.

CUA went 5-5 in the Landmark Conference this season, including a pair of losses to first round opponent Susquehanna on March 31.  The Cardinals are 5-6 all-time in the conference tourney, having reached the championship round in 2008 and again in 2011.

The other two tournament teams, Moravian and Scranton, will face-off in Friday's second game, with the two winners meeting later that afternoon.
