CUA drops a pair to Shenandoah

WASHINGTON – CUA had trouble getting its bats going on Sunday vs. Shenandoah and dropped both games of a doubleheader.  The Hornets took game one 6-0 before earning a 4-0 win in game two.  Following Sunday's action, CUA sits at 13-11 overall.

In game one both starting pitchers were on their game early, with neither team able to score for the first four innings.

Shenandoah finally broke the scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the fifth, which came on an RBI groundout by Heather Sink and an RBI single by Lauren McCabe.

The Hornets added two more runs in the sixth on a Brittany Guepe RBI single and a CUA error to up their lead to 4-0.

Shenandoah then sealed the win with two more runs in the seventh. 

CUA had one final chance to stage a rally in the bottom of the frame with Allie Cain leading off with a walk and moving down to second on a stolen base.

With two outs, Megan Rizzi walked, giving the Cardinals two runners on, but Mel Galella popped out to second to end it.

Brooke Over earned the win for the Hornets after going 7.0 innings and allowing three hits, while Kerri Apicella suffered the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits.

In the day's second game, Shenandoah took a 1-0 lead in the third when Maggie Waters came home on a double play.

The Hornets pushed two more runs across in the fourth and then added their fourth and final run in the seventh.

CUA again had trouble getting its offense in gear, with the Cardinals finishing with only three hits in the game.

Amanda Litwin was the game two winner, after she went all seven innings, struck out three and did not allow any runs, while Erin McMakin was dealt the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits.

CUA now hits the road for its next pair of series, beginning with an April 7 showdown vs. Drew in Madison, N.J.  First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
