WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America softball team began its Spring Break trip to Clearwater, Fla., in style as senior outfielder Molly MacNeill blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to down Haverford, 4-3.
MacNeill scored three of the Cardinals' four runs while sophomore pitcher Kelly Lynch improved to 2-0 with her first complete game effort of the year. She allowed just one earned run and struck out six.
Catholic took an early 1-0 lead in the first as MacNeill came around to score, but Haverford plated two in the third to take the lead. The Cards quickly answered with another run from MacNeill in the bottom of the frame.
A leadoff Haverford homer in the fifth put the Cards down one, but Catholic got the equalizer on an RBI single from senior Alyssa Keane before MacNeill's heroics.
The Cardinals played their second game of the day just minutes later as they took on Roanoke. Catholic totaled eight hits, but could not plate any runs until the seventh as they cut into a 6-0 lead, but fell, 6-2.
The Cards are back in action on Monday with two more games against Alvernia and Lebanon Valley.
