WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America softball team went 6-4 overall in Clermont, Fla., at the PFX Spring Games as the Cardinals split on the final day games. The Cards defeated Roger Williams, 6-4, but fell to Ohio Northern, 4-2, in extra innings.
Catholic scored three times in the first and third innings as they rolled to the win against Rogers Williams. Junior outfielder Rachel Valdes got it started with a RBI single and senior catcher Alyssa Keane followed with a two-RBI single.
A wild pitch in the third scored a run for the Cards before sophomore second baseman Hailey Horton plated two with a single through the left side.
Roger Williams scored in the fifth and got three more in the seventh but sophomore pitcher Kelly Lynch came in for the save.
The Cardinals went head-to-head with an 11-1 Ohio Northern team and scored late in the sixth inning to make it a 1-1 game into extras as junior designated player Megan Colline singled a run across the plate.
It was Ohio Northern that struck hard in extras as they brought in three runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Colline did it again in the bottom of the eighth with another RBI single, but Catholic could get no closer.
Catholic is now slated to return to D.C., for its home opener on Wednesday, March 15 with a doubleheader against Shenandoah at 2 p.m.
