WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic University softball team swept Juniata College in Landmark Conference action on Saturday to improve to 13-11 overall. Sophomore Makayla Czan went an impressive 4-6 on the day with two doubles.
Game 1: Catholic 3, Juniata 2
The first two innings were scoreless for both teams. But in the top of the third, the Eagles struck first, scoring two runs on three hits.
After a slow fourth inning, Catholic responded in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, freshman Bella Ronca drew a walk. Her fellow classmate, Marissa Bruder, then singled to left and both runners advanced on an error by the left fielder, scoring Ronca.
With solid defensive play in the top of the sixth, the Cards tacked on one more run to tie the ball game in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Juliet Lodes hit a double off the top of the right field fence to score Scott, who reached first on a walk.
Both teams were unable to secure the win in the seventh, so the game went to extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Cardinals scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Allie Lajeunesse for their fifth Landmark Conference win of the season.
Game 2: Catholic 7, Juniata 1
Catholic's bats came alive in the second game, scoring seven runs on 11 hits. The Cards were led by the top of their lineup, with freshman Marissa Bruder, sophomore Taylor Forgen, and sophomore Makayla Czan all going 2-3 at the plate.
Junior Claire Sturek got the start for Cardinals, throwing her third complete game of the season to led Catholic to a 7-1 victory over the Eagles of Juniata College.
Juniata jumped on the Cards in the top of the first scoring their only run of the game on two hits.
The second inning was evenly played, with both teams going three up, three down.
In the bottom of the third, Catholic responded with a blowout inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Junior Kacie Badolato got things starts with a single to the pitcher. The freshman duo of Bella Ronca and Bruder then combined to advance Badolato to third, and Bruder reached first on a base hit. Forgen followed with a single to left center, scoring Badolato to tie the game. Bruder then scored on a wild pitch. Czan doubled up the middle to score Forgen. Junior Sabrina Scott then singled to right field to score Czan and take a 4-1 lead.
Sturek went to work in the remaining four innings, not allowing another Eagle hit.
Catholic tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Bruder recorded an RBI single through the left side to score sophomore Giselle Diaz, who reached on a single. After a pitching change for Juniata, the Cards scored two more runs on a ground ball from Forgen and a Czan double to left field to take a 7-1 lead.
The remaining innings were scoreless for both teams. With a sweep over the Eagles, the Cardinals improved to 6-2 in the Landmark Conference.
Catholic will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 9 when they host Salisbury, first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
