BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Catholic University softball team saw its season come to an end as the Cardinals fell to No. 10 Moravian, 11-3, in the first elimination game at the 2019 Landmark Conference Tournament.
The Cardinals offense struggled to get things going as they were held to only four hits. Sophomore Makayla Czan went 1-3 with two RBI's while sophomore Sophie Maccarone went 1-2 with an RBI and a walk.
Catholic got on the board first, scoring two runs on a double from sophomore Makayla Czan. Freshman Marissa Bruder reached on a walk before advancing to second on a single up the middle from junior Sabrina Scott. Both runners then scored on the Czan double. Czan advanced to third on a groundball but with two outs, she was left stranded.
Moravian responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits to take the lead.
The Greyhounds tacked on three more runs in the second before sophomore Allie Lajeunesse entered the game in relief for Scott. Moravian then scored one more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead
Lajeunesse and the Catholic defense stepped up in the next two innings forcing back to back scoreless innings for Moravian.
Catholic scored one run in the top of the sixth to close the Greyhounds lead to four. Junior Kacie Badolato led off with a double down the right field line before advancing to third on a groundball. Sophomore Sophie Maccarone then singled to right, scoring Badolato.
Junior Claire Sturek was the final pitcher to enter the circle for the Cards. After fanning a batter for the first out of the inning, Moravian hit a grand slam to take an 11-3 lead and end the game in sixth innings.
The Cards finished the 2019 season with a 20-20 record after going 9-3 in the Landmark Conference.
