Royals Flush Out Cardinals
CUA Falls to 3-5 in Landmark play

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University softball team dropped a pair of games to the University of Scranton Royals (20-4, 8-0 Landmark) Sunday at the CUA Softball Field.  The games kept the Royals on its 12-game win streak but dropped CUA to 11-15 overall and 3-5 in the Landmark Conference.

Scranton scored first with two runs to start the game, but what could have been a bad situation for the Cardinals ended with a strikeout to end the at bat with the bases loaded.  In the bottom of the second inning the Cardinals made it 2-1.  Kerry Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and was brought home after Sophie Gage (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales) hit a bomb to centerfield for the double.  The top of the third looked much like the first as Scranton once again loaded the bases but pitcher Stacie Goddard (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) used two K's to get out of the jam.

In the top of the fourth, Scranton looked to be loading the bases again with runners on second and third.  A long single brought home both runners as the Royals grabbed a three-run lead.  They added one more in the seventh making the final 5-1.

The Cards were out hit 9-5 but had one less error in the field.  Leading CUA at the plate was Gage who was 2-3 with one RBI and a double.  Goddard took the loss in the circle pitching the complete game with five strikeouts.

The second game started out like the first with Scranton loading the bases but the Cardinal defense managing to hold them scoreless.  The offense matched the effort with three runs thanks to a double to center by Kat Ager (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and single to the right field fence by Goddard.  The top of the second looked as though Scranton would respond loading the bases with one out but a pair of K's once again stranded three runners on base.

In the top of the third, the Scranton offense began to move runners as five hits and an error took them through the order scoring five runs in the process.  The Cardinals staged a rally of their own in the bottom of the inning.  A single from Gage started the onslaught of hits driving in one runner.  Rachel Baker (Riverdale, Md./Saint Vincent Pallotti) then hit a rocket to left field for the two-RBI double.  Immediately following, Kelly Lukacs (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) smashed a double to the same spot to bring in the fifth making the score 7-5.

Unfortunately, the Scranton bats stayed hot coming back to take the lead 9-7 after four runs but once again the inning ended with three runners on.  The Royals added one more in the fifth and three in the sixth making the final 13-7.

Ager led the Cardinals in the second game going 2-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. CUA had just nine hits while Scranton managed 16.  The Cardinals also had three errors in the field.

The Cardinals will travel to USMMA next Saturday for another Landmark Conference matchup.
