CUA beats the Eagles for the first time in program history

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University softball squad (8-6, 2-0 CAC) made history Thursday evening by sweeping the Mary Washington Eagles (12-10, 0-2 CAC) in both teams first Capital Athletic Conference game of the season.  The Cards won the first game 2-1 and came from behind to get the second 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh.  It marks the first time that Catholic University softball has defeated Mary Washington in conference play.

Mary Washington scored in the top of the first but the Cards were able to hold them for the rest of the game.  CUA got on the board in the third inning thanks to a pair of walks and some solid base running.  A single by junior Kara Walker (New Milford, N.J./Holy Angels) brought both runners in to make it 2-1 which would be the final.

In the first game, the Cards had just three hits but held Mary Washington to five.  Elyse Papianni (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) had the win for the Cards with one strikeout and no earned runs.  Katherine Matusik took the loss for UMW.

The second game much more of a battle for the Cards who were looking at a 3-0 deficit at one point.  After allowing two runs in the first and one in the second, the Cards came up ready in the bottom of the inning.  Once again the middle of the order came through as clean up hitter Kat Ager (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) got on with a hit.  Stephanie Clemente (Warren , N.J./Immaculata) added a double in the next at bat bringing Ager home.  Walker then stepped up and hit a rocket to left field to make it 2-0.

The Eagles scored their final two runs in the fourth but the Cardinals were finished manufacturing some scores.  Three runners crossed the plate in the fifth inning to tie it up.  Entering  the seventh it was knotted at five and the Cards managed to force the Eagles to go three and out.  With the top of the order due up CUA put together a quick rally.  Heather Holley (Owings, Md./Northern) singled to left and advanced as Rachel Marrion (Los Altos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) laid down a textbook bunt making it safe to first.  Kelly Lukacs (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) came up in the three spot and nailed one to right to score Holley and win the game 6-5.

Lukacs was 3-4 for the game with two RBI to lead the Cards while Walker was 2-2 at the plate.  CUA had 11 hits to UMW's eight.

The Cardinals will have little time to rest as they travel across town to take on Gallaudet on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
