CUA stays undefeated in conference play

WASHINGTON- The Catholic University softball team remained undefeated in conference play with two big wins over the Gallaudet Bison (1-3, 0-2 CAC) Friday evening.  CUA won the first game 9-0 in five innings and the second 8-0 in six.  The victories improve the Cardinals to 10-6 overall and 4-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

The Cards got some help from the Bison defense to start the first game scoring their first three runs off of three straight Gallaudet fielding errors.  In the second inning Kerry Convery got on with a hit and was driven in by leadoff Heather Holley (Owings, Md./Northern) after she knocked one out of the park.  The Cardinals scored once in the fourth off of errors and capped it off with another two-run homer in the fifth this time by Convery.

On defense the Cards took care of things in the circle as Elyse Papianni threw nine strikeouts and allowed only three hits.  After five innings the game was called and CUA had the 9-0 win.  Holley was 2-4 to lead CUA with the squad's eight hits.  The defense had no errors in the field.

In the second game, the Bison defense tightened up committing fewer errors but the squad was unable to control the Cardinals bats.  Two doubles in the first scored Holley and a pair of two-baggers as well as two singles in the second made it 5-0 early on.  Holley hit her second double of the game in the fourth and was brought home on a hit from Kat Ager (Olney, Md./Good Counsel).  The sixth was the final straw as Sophie Gage (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales) got on with a hit and Kelly Luckas (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) slammed one over the fence to end the game making the final 8-0.

Stephanie Clemente got the win pitching most of the game and notching seven strikeouts as well as allowing just one hit.  Holley and Ager were both 2-4 for the game that saw 13 Cardinal hits to the Bison's one.

The Cards will play a doubleheader at McDaniel on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m.
