Weather delays the games over an hour

CARLISLE, Pa.- The Catholic University softball team (10-10) battled for almost five hours Tuesday evening but in the end the Cards fell in both games to the Dickinson College Red Devils (6-4).  CUA lost the first game 4-3 after a storm interrupted play for an hour and fifteen minutes. The Cards charged back in the second but were defeated 8-7.

After waiting out the rain the first game started with solid defense.  Cardinal Pitcher Stephanie Clemente (Warren, N.J./Immaculata) struck out the first three batter of the game and finished with six for the contest.  CUA scored first with two runs in the fifth and a third in the sixth thanks to a double by Rachel Baker (Riverdale, Md./Saint Vincent Pallotti) to drive in the run making it 3-0.  Unfortunately the Cardinal defense let up in the bottom of the sixth allowing four runs on a series of hits and an error.  This would be the dagger for CUA as they couldn't score in the top of the seventh making the final 4-3.

Dickinson had nine hits for the game while CUA managed five.  The Cardinals also had three costly errors to the Red Devils' one.  Clemente took the loss in the circle dropping to 4-6 on the season six strikeouts and no walks.

Both teams used the late momentum from the first game to get on the board quickly in the second.  In the first inning CUA posted five hits including a three-run homer by Clemente to go up 4-0.  Unfortunately Dickinson came right back with three runs after a tough start for freshman pitcher Katie Ann Trotta (Seaford, N.Y./Saint Dominic).

Dickinson score one more in the second to knot it at four but a double by Baker in the third put CUA ahead again as she drove in Kerry Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) and Clemente.  But again the Red Devils tied it up with two runs in the fourth.  The Cards took the lead for the last time in the fifth as Convery led off with a double and was brought home by Rachel Marrion (Los Altos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty).  Dickinson had a bit left and two hits to start the bottom of the inning sunk CUA as they fell 8-7.

Clemente took the loss after entering in the fifth.  Baker and Convery both went 2-3 at the plate while Clemente led with three RBI.  CUA had 12 hits in the game to Dickinson's nine.

CUA will travel to York on Sunday for a doubleheader, the Cards are currently 4-0 in conference play.
