Cards Continue Winning Streak, Take 2 from Randolph Macon

WASHINGTON- The Catholic University softball squad (9-5) continued its winning ways by winning both games of the doubleheader against Randolph Macon.

In the first game the Cardinals fell behind 1 – 0 in the second inning. In the Cardinals half of the 2nd inning Stacie Goddard started the inning after being hit by a pitch. Lynn Brown singled and Kristen Trancynger grounded into a fielder’s choice. Passed balls moved the runners forward and Trancynger eventually scored. With Trotta on 3rd Stephanie Clemente singled to score Trotta giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

That lead held up until the 4th when the Yellow Jackets scored to tie the game on back to back doubles by Beard and Camp. In the bottom of the sixth the Cardinals would take the lead for good. Megan Rizzi singled to lead off the inning and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball. Stacie Goddard sacrificed Rizzi to 3rd. Lynn Brown then grounded out to the pitcher and Rizzi was stranded between 3rd and home and eventually tagged out. Brown advanced to 2nd on the play. Kristen Trancynger, Katie Trotta and Stephanie Clemente each singled that brought Brown and Trancynger to the plate to give the Cardinals a 4 -2 lead.

Clemente retired the side in the top of the 7th earning the victory for the Cardinals. On the day Clemente gave up 3 hits, 1 walk and had 5 strikeouts. The Cardinals scattered 10 hits in securing the victory.

In game two, CUA opened the scoring in the 2nd inning as Megan Daubman doubled with one out. Katie Trotta followed with a singled to right field scoring Daubman. Samantha Daubman then grounded to 2nd scoring Trotta from 3rd giving the Cardinals a 2 – 0 lead.

That lead was all the Cardinals would need as Stacie Goddard held the Yellow Jackets offense silent allowing 2 hits while striking out 7.

CUA will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday, March 23, as they host to Frostburg State for a 3 p.m., contest.
