Cardinals begin competition at conference championship

SCRANTON, Pa. – CUA opened competition at the 2013 Landmark Conference championship on Friday. Julia Wisler earned the second conference title of her career, racing her way to a first place finish in the 50 free. Dominic Grillo was the top finisher on the men's side placing fourth in the 50 free.  After one day, the men sit in 4th place with 99 points and the women are also in 4th with 108 points.

On the men's side, CUA earned 32 points with a third place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, as Grillo, Stephen Gill, Stephen Mooers and Matt Wager finished in 1:27.21.

Grillo earned 15 points for his 4th place finish in the 50 free, finishing in 21.39, and Wagner scored 11 points in the 200 IM, posting a time of 2:01.59, which placed him in 8th.

Patrick McMullen picked up nine points with a 9th place showing in the 500 free, finishing in 4:55.59.

Wisler became CUA's first champion of the weekend with a first place time of 24.69 in the 50 free, earning 20 points in the process.

Michelle Navarro, Laura Keehn, Rachel Berry and Wisler placed 2nd in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:09.53, while the quartet of Navarro, Nicole DiGiacinto, Chelsea Doyle and Wisler took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 1:41.80.

Giambagno picked up 12 points with a 7th place finish in the 500 free, posting a time of 5:30.53, and in the 200 IM, Nicole Castellano placed 11th (2:22.32) and Melanie Rebechi was 15th (2:23.78).

USMMA currently leads the men's standings with 283 points, followed by Susquehanna (180) and Scranton (167). Susquehanna sits atop the women's standings, after totaling 245.5 points. Scranton (199.5) and USMMA (129) are next.

Action on Saturday gets underway beginning at 10 a.m. The championship wraps up on Sunday.
