WASHINGTON - Fresh off of their midseason training trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., The Catholic University of America men's & women's swimming & diving teams swept Washington College in a nonconference showdown. The men remain undefeated in the 2017-18 season and won the meet with an outstanding 165-97 finish. The women advanced to 6-1 overall as they knocked off the Shorewomen 144-117.
Both Catholic squads opened the meet strong with first-place finishes in the 200-medley relay. Freshman Caroline Beal led off the women's team with a 29.55 backstroke split. Seniors Basira Knight (31.79) and Rachel Chain (27.46) followed with breaststroke and butterfly, respectively and freshman Morgan James (25.46) swam the freestyle to anchor with winning relay (1:54.26).
Sophomore Olivier Nguyen (24.53) started things off for the men's team with the backstroke leg followed by freshman Chris Grunbok (28.11) in the breaststroke and sophomore Kevin Jay in the butterfly (23.70). Freshman Matt Mahon finished out the race with a 21.91 freestyle split for a winning time of 1:38.25.
Beal later took the top spots in the 100-backstroke (1:02.15) and the 200-backstroke (2:14.44) while James earned first place in the 50-freestyle (25.29).
James led off the Cardinals winning 200-freestyle relay in 25.99 seconds. Junior Rachael Zarlinski swam the second leg in 25.94 followed by Chain (25.87) and Knight (26.13), respectively, for a first-place time of 1:43.93.
Junior Pippa Rogers swam for the top spot in the 200-butterfly with a finishing time of 2:22.52 followed by her classmate Emily Messina (2:22.83), who finished second. Rogers (1:04.53) later touched in second during the 100-butterfly behind Catholic senior Brooke Krajewski who swam a winning time of 1:03.80.
Nguyen hit the wall first in both of his individual events with a finishing time of 54.30 in the 100-backstroke and 53.30 in the 100-butterfly. Freshman David Lindros (59.98) trailed Nguyen in the 100-backstroke to finish second while Jay touched in at 54.40 for second-place in the 100-butterfly.
Grunbok took gold in the breaststroke events with top times of 1:02.35 in the 100-yard race and 2:15.73 in the 200-yard race. Jay followed Grunbok in the 200-breaststroke with a silver time of 2:19.05.
Junior Sam Hicks won the 200-freestyle (1:47.40) while sophomore Luke Nicholson (2:01.03) and senior Peter Bajorek (2:03.00) earned a one-two finish in the 200-butterfly. Bajorek (2:05.67) touched in for second-place in the 200-individual medley behind Catholic freshman Greg McCarthy who swim a winning time of 2:04.66.
Mahon won the 100-freestyle (48.99) and later anchored Catholic's winning 200-freestyle relay. The foursome of sophomore George Isaacs (22.28), Nguyen (21.61), Jay (21.84) and Mahon (22.08) touched in with a winning time of 1:27.81.
The Cardinals travel to Randolph-Macon College to take on the Yellow Jackets on Saturday, January 20.
