Award is renamed after long-time SWA

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America Department of Athletics held its annual Senior Banquet Thursday honoring all graduating athletes and giving out end of the year awards.  This year was especially significant as Director of Athletics Mike Allen announced the former SAAC Role Model Award was going to be renamed the Dowd Student-Athlete Role Model Award after longtime Senior Women's Administrator Jone Dowd who retired this spring.

The recipients must embody the qualities and characteristics of what it means to be a student-athlete role model.  They must maintains an exceptional balance, in several areas beyond the athletic arena including graciousness in victory, humility in defect and rallying for the same spirit among his/her peers. Recipients must also extend interests to pursue academic excellence and challenges others to embrace school and community service by being a role model to peers, coaches and teachers.  This year's winners included swimming Olivia Chasse and baseball player Mike Geraghty who have both found the time to excel at athletics despite tough majors.

Geraghty pitched and was the designated hitter during his four years on the baseball squad.  He was a two-year team captain and helped the Cardinals to their first Landmark Conference Championship this past spring.  He also spent two years on the football team playing in 12 games.  The civil engineering major spends a lot of his free time doing construction internships and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Chasse is the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president and spent much of her time outside of the pool organizing SAAC events for students or in the community.  The nursing major also managed to volunteer through campus ministry and keep up a 3.89 cum GPA.  In the water, she is a CUA record holder and was All-CAC numerous times.  Her first season she was voted the team Rookie of the Year after an outstanding CAC Conference meet.

Geraghty and Chasse will both graduate on Saturday at CUA's commencement ceremony.
