Exciting Day of Swimming Ends with a Women's Win and Men's Narrow Defeat

WASHINGTON- The Cardinals women's swim team continued their strong season today with a dominating performance over the Susquehanna Crusaders.  The final score was 151-111. Shining for the Cardinals were Freshman Brenna Foust (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Sophomore Lisa Brooks (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax). Both finished with three wins and a second place finish.  Foust won both the 100 and 200 yard freestyles in times of 58.62 sec. and 2:04.97, respectively. She also swam the third leg of the first place 200 yard medley relay team. Other members of this team included Sophomore Mary Connelly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), Brooks, and senior Krystal Dole (Corbin, Ky./Model).  Brooks also took home first place in the 100 yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:11.86 was nearly four seconds ahead of the next finisher.  Brooks rounded out her top finishes with a win in the 200 yard freestyle, swimming in a time of 2:36.08.

Other highlights for the CUA women swimmers included Krystal Dole's first place finish in the 50 yard freestyle. She finished in 26.56 seconds. Freshman Katherine Kelly (Spring Lake, N.J./Manasquan) won the 400 yard IM in a time of 5:05.10. In the last event of the day, the Cardinals relay team of junior Katie Blemmings (Langhorne, Pa./ Notre Dame), sophomore Anne Welsh (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton), freshman Hillary Gabbard (Wilmington. Del./Padawa Academy), and senior Kellie Dunn (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) beat the Crusaders by four seconds in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

On the men's side, the Cardinals suffered a heart breaking defeat that came down to the last race. The Cardinal swimmers needed to place one, two in the 400 yard freestyle relay to take home the victory. However, the Susquehanna swimmers finished just 4 tenths of a second faster than the Cardinal swimmers. This allowed the Crusaders to win the meet by two points, 132-130.

Despite the end result, the Cardinal men still had a very successful day. Senior Reik Foust (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) had another outstanding day in the pool. He won the 100 yard backstroke, the 50 yard freestyle, the 100 yard freestyle, and was a member of the winning 400 yard freestyle team. The other members of this team included: freshman Justin Bertuch (Patchogue, NY/St. Anthony's), junior Kevin Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel), and freshman Brandan Reilly (Alexandria, VA./Bishop Ireton). Also having a very successful day for the Cardinals was Sophomore Brian Jones (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield). He won the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:51.21, just .08 seconds ahead of a Susquehanna swimmer, and the 500 yard freestyle in a time of 5:09.47.

Both the women's and men's teams will take a break from meets to take finals and celebrate the holiday season. They return to action January 17th in a conference meet at Scranton.
